  1. I just discovered your blog searching out info on NZ and ex-pats. I dropped over – you’re from Detroit of all places. We’re from a small suburb (affectionately known in the past as the hub of the mafia), Grosse Pointe Woods. Went to GP North, lived near 8 mile (not the same as Eminem), went to Lawrence Tech for a short bit in Southfield then we graduated from MSU 1983. Electrical engineering. Many scoops of ice cream (and chocolate cheese, poor college student protein source) from the Dairy dept next door and spirited discussions with friends from the Middle East at the International Center. I loved to go to the pastures and talk to the cows (they don’t talk back smack) and if I could stand the smell, the pigs. Then there was the fragrant aroma of sheep manure spread every spring on the experiemental corn fields next to our apt complex. Maybe there’s a secret to the 6 ft high corn every summer. I saw your MSU shirt, so you must have had the Moo U experience. It was a wonderful, freezing cold environment, perfect for hunkering down in either a lab warmed by fluorescent lights or the Peanut Barrel (this may not have still been in business…I’m talking late 70s and early 80s), shells carpeting the floor or Beggar’s Banquet for some exceptional food. There was also a great dive called El Azteco run by 2 guys from New Mexico that had outstanding blue corn enchiladas. But I digress.

I loved the footage of you feeding the pigs. It really was simple but peaceful. They’re definitely furrier than their American cousins but quite endearing with that pronounced under bite. The light was gorgeous. Your olive groves certainly appreciate it. I stumbled on your website researching what it’s like to live in NZ in comparison to San Diego where we are. Have wanted to visit for some time – I like what I hear about the culture and lifestyle. It’s wearying here in the States to say the least – even with Stephen Colbert providing much needed comic relief. Not many people from Detroit range past the Rocky Mountains, so I’m curious to see what part of Detroit you’re from and what brought you to the southern hemisphere.

    Cheers

    1. Hi Cindy – My MSU shirt on Instagram was a gift from my sister, who went there. But oh yes I remember Cracker Barrel! I lived in Troy before moving to Chicago, so Detroit suburbs, not city proper. I always loved heading down into Detroit while I was a student at Oakland University, though. The Detroit Film Theatre, the Art Institute, shows at Fox Theatre before it was restored. (The Fox had a faded, run-down beauty back then.)

NZ is great. Interesting to note that the American interest in moving to NZ right after Trump’s election quickly dissipated – http://www.stuff.co.nz/world/americas/us-election-2016/88785550/american-interest-in-nz-move-after-trump-victory-shortlived

      Best of luck!

  2. The feed looks like a mush of grains. Do you slop them( leftover food). That was away my disgusting job as a kid.
    Love the pigs.

    1. Yes, we give them all sorts of leftover food. They’re especially fond of sour milk and lemon rinds. Gack.
